Hurunui District New Zealand

The rural township of Cheviot is located on the coastal route between Amberley and Kaikoura and is based in the heart of the Hurunui's pastoral farming area.

One hour South of Kaikoura on State Highway 1, this small peaceful tourist stop has a popular cafe, museum and 12 hole golf course.

Cheviot Hills Domain is a wonderful place to enjoy some fresh air and stretch your legs. The original extensive gardens can still be seen and at the right time of the year you may be able to pick some pears from the pear trees that still stand. A delightful spot for a summer picnic.

Gore Bay is a secluded nearby beach accessible from State Highway 1 at Dommet over the Cathedrals Road or from Cheviot township. The southern end is safe for swimming and surfing while the rock pools provide plenty of sea life viewing.

Hurunui District New ZealandGore Bay Reserve has a circuit walking track which is well signposted. The walk offers wonderful lookouts along the coast before winding down into another gully. 'The Cathedrals', which are eroded siltstone pillars, can be seen from the circuit walk but are best viewed from the road that continues from Gore Bay along the coast (which is also clearly signposted).

South of Cheviot, visitors can turn to the Coast at Domett and come to the mouth of the Hurunui River. This area is popular for fishing and whitebaiting which has resulted in the development of a small community. Access to the water is marked at the camping ground.

Visitors to Cheviot can't help but notice the sheep scattered along the main street. These sheep are an acknowledgment of the role of sheep in Cheviot's history and seem to be quite happy quietly watching the world whizz by!

Cheviot offers a selection of rural and coastal accommodation and the township has a country pub, accommodation, modern public toilets, fast food outlets, restaurants, cafe, petrol station and convenience shops.
