ECO & NATURE
The Hurunui district boasts parks and reserves in all of its townships and offers fabulous opportunities to discover the rich history and culture of this magnetic landscape.
Probably best know for whale watching, the Hurunui has other fascinating attractions for eco and outdoor lovers, such as centuries-old cave art, archaeological sites, breath-taking coastal bluffs, bird-watching and other natural wonders to be enjoyed at your leisure.
Eco-tours offer an unobtrusive opportunity to view native bird and marine life within their natural habitat. Watch the spectacular Dusky dolphin as it leaps from the ocean, witness the truly awe-inspiring moment as a huge whale prepares to dive or enjoy an unforgettable Albatross encounter.
Farm animals are popular with the young and old and visitors to the Hurunui can get up close and personal with some of New Zealand’s most popular farm animals. Visit the Nature park and enjoy a 'hands-on' experience with animals such as Wapiti deer, Highland cattle, goats, Emus, sheep, Alpacas, Llamas, rabbits, ducks, chickens and more!
The many reserves and parks scattered throughout the Hurunui are a pleasant way to enjoy nature at its best. Most parks and reserves have toilet facilities and picnic areas. History lovers can enjoy the historical assets that are combined in some of these parks, such as Watters Cottage or the cob cottage in the Rutherford Domain.
Hurunui parks and reserves are designed as an opportunity for travellers and locals to enjoy a restful area in natural surrounds, ideal for picnics or for the kids to stretch their legs and play.
